Chapter 7: Just In Time

Their town was small, and John knew it like the back of his hand. One of the favorite things he and Vanessa had taken to doing was leisurely walks around the block. Sometimes they were in the morning after an incredible night, sometimes they were after dinner before an incredible night. Either way, John learned exactly how to get to her office from the house, and he was out the door in almost five minutes flat.

After about fifteen minutes of walking, John could see her building in the blocks ahead. It was then that he began thinking of what he was going to actually say to her. That whole time, he couldn't understand why she didn't just ask him to stay. He did realize, though, that he never offered to do so.

Before he knew it, John was approaching the doors of her office building. He had been there in the past few weeks, but the receptionists were still surprised to see him. Roger, true to his nature, was the king of office gossip. Everyone expected John to be flying off overseas by now, leaving Vanessa behind to become a bitter lady.

He didn't even acknowledge them as he passed. Roger's office was within sight of the front doors, and he almost fell out of his chair when he saw John march towards Vanessa's office.

When John reached her door, he didn't knock. Instead, he stood there frozen. He could hear her talking on the phone, and for the first time since he'd been awake he questioned his motivations. For a moment, he wondered if he really even wanted to stay with her. For a moment, he wondered if he'd lost his mind altogether.

John barely noticed it when Roger approached him.

“I really do think she's in love with you, man,” Roger said.

John looked over at Roger, almost like a lost puppy. Roger almost felt sorry for him, except for the fact that John was almost twice his size. Roger just shook his head and smiled. He gestured for John to go in. After another breath, John reached for the doorknob and opened the door.

Vanessa looked up with a frown at the person who entered without knocking. When she saw it was John, she just hung up the phone. She walked over to him, the planes were still landing at the base out the window behind them. Vanessa looked up into John's eyes with a mix of relief and exasperation.

“You're supposed to be on one of those planes here soon, Sergeant,” she said.

“No, I'm not,” he answered, “I don't think there's another place that I need to be more than right here.”

Vanessa rested her head against his shoulder and thought. She breathed in his scent and listened to the sound of his heartbeat. With a smile, she wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on her tiptoes to reach her lips to his. She kissed him with more passion than she had ever felt at one time in her entire life.
